From Critical Reading to Critical Writing (Academic Language and Learning)

This workshop will provide you with sets of questions that require you to take a ‘critical’ stance to disciplinary knowledge. These will help you to challenge assumptions and ideas as well as extend your knowledge. It then aims to help you apply this critical stance to your reading and show your critical thinking in your writing. It is a detailed look at how to interact with knowledge and how to meet the university’s academic expectations of criticality and originality in your work.

Target group: All students

Functional Grammar for Academic Writing 1 (Academic Language and Learning)

Can you tell a verb from an adjective? Can you identify the subject of a sentence? This course covers four basic areas of English grammar (sentence structure, verb groups, verb tenses and noun groups). By the end of the course, you will have developed your knowledge and understanding of basic grammar so that you can analyse your own writing and use language more clearly and effectively. To know if you need to take this course or a more advanced one, take the short diagnostic test at bit.ly/GDT_LH

Target group: Undergraduate students and masters by coursework students.

Functional Grammar for Academic Writing 2 (Academic Language and Learning)

How can I write more complex sentences?  Should I use passive voice or not? This workshop will change your understanding of grammar from simply rules to write correctly to resources to create meaning in your academic writing. To participate in this workshop you need to either have completed Functional Grammar 1 or have a sound knowledge of basic grammar concepts. To check, complete this short diagnostic quiz at bit.ly/GDT_LH

Target audience: Students who have successfully completed Functional Grammar for Academic Writing 1 or have passed the short diagnostic test.

What to bring: a draft of current writing and sample paragraph from your discipline

This workshop series will take you through the process of finding and selecting appropriate sources, analysing and synthesising your evidence for your writing purpose and using different vocabulary and grammatical structures to incorporate sources successfully into your writing.

One-to-One Consultation (Academic Language and Learning)

The Learning Hub (Academic Language and Learning) offers individual consultations to help you develop effective reading, writing and time management strategies and provide helpful feedback on your work using a developmental approach. Half-hour consultations are available Monday to Thursday from 10am-12pm. We do not proofread the final versions of your texts (such as assignments) before you submit them.

An appointment with a Learning Success Advisor can help you:

  • Interpret your assignment requirements

  • Structure your writing and express your ideas more clearly

  • Enhance your academic writing style

  • Improve your self-editing skills

  • Develop your reading and note-taking skills

  • Identify resources to develop your academic language skills

  • Adapt to university study (including Higher Degree by Research studies) and manage your workload

In order to maximise the benefits of appointments and provide a fair system for all students, we have some guidelines around appointment booking:

  • Be mindful of your assignment due dates and plan ahead so you can get the most benefit from seeing a Learning Success Advisor

  • We do not edit, proofread, grammar check or revise assignments

  • We cannot advise on the disciplinary content of your work. Your lecturers, tutors and supervisors are the best resources for content-specific advice

  • You can only enrol in one session per week. Speak to your Learning Success Advisor if you need more sessions

  • If you are no longer able to attend a booked appointment, please cancel as soon as possible

Online tools to expand your vocabulary

Among the challenges of academic writing is the need for lexical variation: academic writers in English need a broad vocabulary, and you need to know how to put it to use. This can help your readers to understand important distinctions and it can also make for a more readable style. A number of key online tools can help you to independently build this aspect of your academic language use. In this session, we will introduce useful tools such as the Sketch Engine for Language Learning and the Corpus of Contemporary American English and show how to employ them.
